Croakers

Fishing for Croakers on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay

Atlantic croakers, more popularly known as hardheads, are some of the more popular fish species in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay during the summer months. These fish are found up and down the Atlantic coast, as well as in the Gulf of Mexico, South America, and Asia. Croakers generally stay in warmer, more tropical waters. Croakers range between 9 and 18 inches in length, and anywhere from 1 to 3 pounds. Croakers are named for the croaking sound that they make. According to popular theory, this noise comes from a set of loose bones inside the head. However, these bones do not exist. The noise actually results from the abdominal muscles beating against the swim bladder.

In Maryland, the croaker fishing is best in the summer months of June, July, and August in the evenings. A popular, yet accurate, saying about the croakers is that they don't start biting until "the sun hits the trees." After sundown, the croakers can bite with a vengeance. Although these fish are relatively small when compared to some other species, they fight as if they are twice as big. The best way to fish for croakers is by jigging your line on the bottom, as they are a bottom-dwelling species. Several different types of bait can be used, but the most popular are squid, peeler crab, bloodworms, and shrimp.
